Type Division
We decided to start this blog by showing you the process of designing the Type Devision logo. So here it is…
My process started with sketching. It helps me to get a rhythm and composition before going further. I did about 20 rough drafts before I felt that I had something to work with. I used a Faber Castell Pitt brush pen and the New Uni Calligraphy set with black and grey brush pens for sketching.
Then I started to develop the drafts that I liked the most and this is when I added some interesting parts to the logo like a TD ligature.
I chose the following sketch to go further with and started to polish and correct it with a Pilot G1 gel pen.
Below is the final corrected sketch I went to illustrator with for tracing and polishing.
After tracing a sketch I start to work with anchor points. The way I work depends on the final look that I want to achieve. So here I just deleted a lot of points and worked with bezier curves trying to make them soft and smooth, but I left some points to keep it rough and notched so that the logo doesn’t lose its handwritten style. I also worked with kerning and tilting.
This is how it looks with a minimum ofanchor points. Guess you can see the difference.
So here it is! Inverted version for your viewing pleasure :)
I did some tricks in photoshop with the final version for the blog and some other places.
